The story of 6 sigma

The bases of the method came from the 20's with the works of Walter Shewhart about the statistical control methods in the mass industry.

Crosby, Juran and especially Deming brought then a new scientist and mathematic dimension to the production with the massive introduction of statistics in the production factories.

Afterwards,  the reduction of variability takes all its sens via the development and generalization of statistical tools.

The work of Deming was also the basis of the TQM (Total quality management) approach about a quality management where the involvement of the employees is crucial.

Finally, in 1986, Bill Smith (Engineer in Motorola) introduced the 6 sigma term as an answer to the objective of production "without defaults". Motorola became the first company to use the 6 sigma as an improvement tool for improving the quality of its electronic devices. The 6 sigma philosophy will then develop and enhance in the 90's under the direction of big American companies. The first one to use it now is General Electric.
